| dc.description.abstract | Integrated pest management (IPM) involves the combined use of chemical, cultural, biological, and genetic strategies. Among cultural strategies, the planting date (PD) has the greatest influence on yield, as it determines the environmental conditions that will impact it, as well as the dynamics of pests and natural enemies. The objective of this thesis was to evaluate whether the PD influences the population fluctuations of pests and predators in a genetically modified soybean variety carrying the Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) gene and in another variety with the same maturity cycle that did not possess this technology (non-Bt). Sampling was conducted during the 2016/2017 summer growing season in San Agustín (Cruz Alta County, Tucumán Province), throughout the entire crop cycle, using two soybean varieties: one Bt (Intacta RR2 PRO®), which combines the transformation events MON 87701 (expressing the Cry1Ac protein) and MON 89788 (glyphosate tolerance, DM 7976 IPRO), and one non-Bt (A8000 RR). Two planting dates (PD) were considered: the first, December 5, 2016 (Optimal Planting Date, OPD), and the second, January 5 of the following year (Late Planting Date, LPD). For each PD and soybean variety, the relative abundance, relative importance, and Shannon-Wiener diversity indices were calculated for both pests and predators. On the other hand, the influence of the main pests on crop yield was determined according to the PD. For both PD, the abundance of pests in non-Bt and Bt soybeans was significantly different, being higher in non-Bt soybeans. The phytophagous species found in both PD for both varieties were Anticarsia gemmatalis, Rachiplusia nu, Chrysodeixis includens, Helicoverpa gelotopoeon, Spodoptera cosmioides, S. eridania, and Rhyssomatus subtilis. The latter species was the most frequent in both PD, and especially on Bt soybeans. Regarding predator abundance, for both PD, the differences did not vary significantly between the evaluated varieties, with spiders being the most abundant organisms. Furthermore, the different PD affected the abundance of the main pests, which impacted crop yield. The highest yield was found in the LPD, with no significant differences between the soybean technologies used. The results obtained provide valuable information for designing integrated pest management strategies in the soybean producing areas of Northwest Argentina. | en |
