The problematic psychoactive substance use in adolescents requires research, not only because of the negative consequences derived from their use, but also because of the high percentage of adolescents involved in this problem. Therefore, this issue has a social nature, becoming a serious public health problem that challenges mental health professionals, producing new demands and new intervention contexts. There are few investigations that contemplate substance use in adolescents with family variables. The objectives of this study are (1) identify the types of problematic psychoactive substance use (alcohol and other drugs) in adolescents 12-17 years old of both sexes in vulnerable areas of San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina and (2) describe the styles of parental socialization in adolescents aged 12-17 of both sexes in the zones previously mentioned, according to whether they use psychoactive substances or not. First of all, it was found that 58% of the participants use some type of psychoactive substances. It was also observed that86% of adolescents between the age of 12 and 13 use substances, a fact that is alarming because of the high percentage that uses it at an early age. An interesting finding is that the percentage of adolescent substance users depends on whether friends consume alcohol regularly; in this sense, peer substance use can be considered as a risk factor. Finally, the authoritative parenting style prevailed, which opens future lines of research in relation to the protective factors involved. | |
