Abyss and epiphany: inquiries into the imaginary of infinity in The Divine Comedy

Abstract

Infinity has always been an elusive, ambiguous, and unfathomable concept. Borges considered it the corrupting element of all others. Leopardi extensively discusses the topic in his poetry and notes in the Zibaldone. However, these disturbing readings, very characteristic of Modernity, strongly contrast with medieval conceptions. So, how should we think about infinity in Dante? What exactly did the supreme poet understand, how did he conceive it? And, moreover, how to construct images of an ineffable idea? We could postulate, a priori, that in The Divine Comedy, infinity acquires multiple faces: it is a theological category to refer to divine attributes, a way of conceiving the cosmos as a whole, a moral category, and also, finally, a mathematical one. And, in a way, it implies the very essence of the poem. In this work, we will explore these multiple readings of infinity, focusing particularly on Dante’s Paradise.

El infinito siempre fue un concepto elusivo, ambiguo, insondable. Borges lo consideraba el elemento corruptor de todos los otros. Leopardi se extiende largamente sobre el tema en su poesía y en sus notas del Zibaldone. No obstante, esas lecturas perturbadoras muy propias de la Modernidad contrastan fuertemente con las concepciones medievales. Entonces, ¿cómo deberíamos pensar el infinito de Dante? ¿Qué entendía exactamente el sumo poeta, cómo lo concebía? Y, además, ¿cómo construir imágenes de una idea inefable? Podríamos postular, a priori, que en La Divina Comedia el infinito adquiere múltiples rostros: es una categoría teológica para referirse a los atributos divinos, es una forma de concebir el cosmos en su conjunto, es una categoría moral y, también, finalmente, matemática. Y, en cierto modo, implica a la propia esencia del poema.En este trabajo indagaremos sobre estas múltiples lecturas del infinito, centrándonos particularmente en el Paraíso dantesco.
